an Ogden Codman Jr watercolor

While at the Met to see the Versailles exhibit, this framed watercolor caught my eye. The presentation drawing by architect Ogden Codman Jr. was for the bedroom of Louise Vanderbuilt's bedroom at Hyde Park in 1898.  I wish we made such evocative drawings for our clients still today; sketch up models cannot compete with the artistry of watercolor. 

Codman, of course, was the friend and co-author to Edith Wharton's 'The Decoration of Houses'. I think a monograph on this decorator's Architect is long overdue!

Making LA Modern: Craig Ellwood architect

While I rarely feature modern design here at ArchitectDesign that does not mean I don't have an appreciation for the style. Rather I think as in anything, quality matters, and so much of what you see that passes as 'modern' is just poor and lazy design. Inside the Department of Justice with the ICAA

Last week I had the pleasure of setting up an exclusive inside look at the Department of Justice for the ICAA . It definitely did not disappoint and now I get to take all of you inside as well! Passing along the national mall one sees massive classical buildings which house different branches of our government but do you ever wonder what they look like inside? Inside the Department of Justice, known as the Robert F Kennedy Building, one is surprised to find an amazing art deco interior behind a rather staid classical facade dating to 1934. Some of the aluminum details on the exterior however give hints at what is to come. Our tour started on the 3rd floor elevator vestibule. This is really the main level where the important offices are located as well as the law library used by the large staff of lawyers. Oheka Castle and Taylor Swift?

Today I bring you Oheka Castle through a music video by Taylor Swift.  Oheka Castle on Long Island was designed by Delano and Aldrich in 1914 for Otto Kahn. The structure happens to be the 2nd largest private house in the United States after the  Biltmore estate . The house is gorgeous and the song is really fun; I'll admit to being a big Taylor Swift fan!  If you're not into the music I still encourage you to watch the video on mute for the images of Oheka Castle alone.
